what to expect when you first seek mental health care?
Close your eyes and imagine this: you’re sitting on an uncomfortable grey couch in a bright, bare room. Across from you sits a very official-looking woman with her hair pinned up, seemingly staring into your soul while scribbling on a notepad…
Yeah… that’s not what therapy looks like.
People often picture mental health services especially therapy or counseling as some cold clinical scene straight out of a movie. In reality, it’s usually much more comfortable, relaxed, and human than that.
Let me convince you.
The first email or phone call is always the scariest. Admitting you need, or even want, help can feel overwhelming.
But what if instead of “help,” we use the word “support?”
That’s essentially what mental health professionals are trained to do - support you through whatever challenges you may be facing. Yeah, we may ask some questions and jot down a few notes, but that’s simply to understand your story and help guide you toward whatever growth or healing looks like for you.
Now let’s go back to that first phone call. Usually, you will speak to someone called an Intake Coordinator. Think of them as your starting guide. They will ask a few basic questions and help figure out what kind of support might work best for you.
The next step is to schedule you for an intake appointment. At Healing Pathways Foundation, we call those “Comprehensive Clinical Assessments.” This is an unnecessarily long term to describe the first conversation of your healing journey.
During this appointment, you will meet with a trained therapist, whose main goal is to gather a snapshot of you and your experiences, your challenges, and what brought you here. It can feel a little like an interview at times, but our therapists work hard to make it feel more like a conversation than an interrogation.
After this initial assessment, we match you with one of our therapists at Healing Pathways. Sounds kind of like a dating app but not at all in a romantic context.
We have a variety of therapists at Healing Pathways Foundation, each with their own specialities, styles, and approaches to care. Our goal is to match you with someone who feels like the right fit.
And here’s an important secret: you’re allowed to switch. If you don’t quite vibe with someone, that’s okay! Finding the right therapist sometimes takes a little trial and error, and we have plenty of other great options waiting in the wings.
Once you have your “soul-therapist” (yes, I said it), you will be able to meet with them as often or as little as you like, as well as receive support from other members of our team, like case managers, nurse practitioners, or peer support specialists.
At the end of the day, your mental health journey belongs to you. Our role is simply to walk alongside you. To listen, guide, and support you with compassion, respect, and maybe even a little humor along the way.
And don’t worry, the couch is probably more comfortable than you imagined.
