Art Therapy For Healing: How Creative Expression Supports Mental Health Recovery

When most people hear the word “therapy,” they picture two people sitting in a quiet office talking face-to-face. But healing does not always begin with words. For many people, especially those who have experienced trauma, words can feel impossible to find.

One way people have found to express themselves is through creative arts.

Creative arts therapies can include approaches like dance therapy, horticulture therapy, trauma-informed yoga, and expressive arts therapy. At Healing Pathways Foundation, we facilitate expressive arts–based therapy through our Creative Pathways program — a therapeutic arts initiative designed to support emotional well-being, identity development, trauma recovery, and resilience through creative expression for children, youth, and adults.

Research in recent years has shown promising outcomes associated with art therapy interventions, including reductions in PTSD symptom severity, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, along with strong participant engagement. For many individuals, creative expression can feel safer and more accessible than traditional talk therapy alone.

Traditional talk-based therapy often relies on verbal fluency, emotional vocabulary, and the ability to cognitively process difficult experiences in real time. But many individuals — particularly traumatized children, non-English speakers, individuals with developmental disabilities, and adults living with severe PTSD — may not have access to those tools in the moment they are needed most.

Creative arts therapies offer another pathway. Instead of relying solely on conversation, expressive arts engage sensory, emotional, and motor systems through movement, rhythm, color, texture, sound, and imagery. The creative process can help externalize emotions that may feel too overwhelming, confusing, or painful to put into words. A painting, collage, dance movement, or song can communicate what language sometimes cannot.

At its core, Creative Pathways is about giving people the opportunity to tell their stories on their own terms.

Our Creative Pathways program currently operates in partnership with Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance, serving residents in one of the most impoverished zip codes in Charlotte. Three times each month, Healing Pathways Foundation visits the community to create a safe, supportive environment where children, youth, and adults can express themselves creatively, build connection, and explore healing through art.
